I have a soft spot for Maugham and lately have intended to reread certain of his works. I chose to read Cakes and Ale first because of my fond memories of the book. I am about half of the way through the novel, and it does not seem half as witty as the book I remember. I am still enjoying the experience, and I chalk the discrepancy between current observation and memory up to the inevitable differences between a man of nineteen years and one of thirty-two.
